The Paxton Boys, a band of lawless frontier men, led by Lazarus Stewart, savaged colonists and massacred a tribe of Conestoga Indians on the Pennsylvania frontier in 1763. Northampton County Sheriff Peter Kachlein, with a Writ to arrest Stewart and his murderous men, formed a posse. The Sheriff, with Deputies Nathan Ogden and James Lawson, approached Ft. Durkee on the Susquehanna River where Stewart was holed up. Deputy Sheriff Nathan Ogden was fatally shot during this arrest attempt and became the first law enforcement officer in Colonial Pennsylvania to be killed in the line of duty on January 20, 1771.
